Here we are... Low cost arrives for train.
As for the time being, train tickets are rather expensive.....
From Paris to Avignon, you had so far 2 options only.
The SNCF trains (French railways) with prices from 29 € to 85/90€ for a second class tickets.
The cheap tickets need to be booked far in advance (about 2 months) and the tarifs go up when nearer to the date. Hardly any last minute deals on this route.
The IDTGV trains (chartered train attached to a SNCF TGV) are allways cheaper and offer more or less the same service with those exceptions :
- more seats in a wagon so slightly less space for the luggage
- you need to print out your ticket yourself
- exchange fees are quite heavy (12€ when made by the web, 17€ by phone) and can be done only up to 5 hours prior departure
- you need to board the train at least 5mn prior train departure
- tickets are nominative and an id can be asked on check-in.
Feb 20th is the launch date of the new lowcost train OUIGO web site (understand We go in French phonetic) for journey starting as from April 2nd, 2013.
The link will lead you to the french site and apparently not available to the non european countries so far.
The deal is that you can get cheap ticket starting at 10 € (says the web site, when newspaper mention 25€).
Trains will operate to Lyon, Avignon, Aix en Provence, Montpellier and Marseille.
The Paris station will not be in Paris central but Marne La Vallée (Eurodisney) on the RER A line. Journey time from Gare de Lyon of roughly 34mn Paris public transport map.
There is a speed line between Charles de Gaule Airport and Marne la Vallée (about 4 trains per hour hour, journey time 10 minutes at a cost starting as from 17€)
This new service will be operated by new train not with 20% more seat (634 seats versus 509 seats, so less space that standard TGV train) offering First Class or Lounge bar. When travelling with 2 suitcases a fee will have to be paid.....
